Características morfométricas y merísticas del bonito argentino OceanDocs
Hansen, J.E..
Collete and Chao (1975) reviewed the systematic and morphology of the Genus Sarda and relatives ((Tribe Sardini), including into their analysis a few S.sarda from the SW Atlantic. Before that, Demir (1964)dealt with the meristic data of the same species from the Black Sea. This paper in concerned with the featuring of the bonito caught in Argentina, from both a morphometric and a meristic point of view. The study made the differences reported by Collette and Chao (op.cit.)among W and E S.sarda populations to be more conspicuous, because our samples had even lower values han those from the NW.

Silva-Melo, L.; Acero-P., A..

Lassus, Patrick; Bardouil, Michele.
From seawater samples collected between 1984 and 1989 in 12 French coastal areas, a morphometric study have been realised on Dinophysis genera restricted to "acuminata" like species. Simple morphological criterias are given as suitable for discrimination of four dominant species occurring during toxic episodes in shellfish farms (Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning): Dinophysis c-closed-integral. sacculus, D. c-closed-integral. acuminata, Dinophysis sp. and D. c-closed-integral. norvegica. This last species cannot be included in the "acuminata complex" and produces temporary blooms along southern Brittany coasts. Pending a more precise diagnosis it is recommended to clarify the relationship between toxin composition and each species previously described.

Perrotta, R.G..
Mackerel from SW Atlantic (22° -39°S) and the coast of Cataluña (42° 30'N) were compared by analizing both morphometric and meristic characters. A multivariate analysis, i.e. principal components was used. The growth curves corresponding to mackerels from different regions (Canarias, North of Chile, Mar del Plata and Rincón in Argentine) were also compared, as well as the mean length at ages 1 and 2 (Mar del Plata- Cataluña, Rincón- Cataluña). Significant differences in the growth were found between two groups. The first group was integrated by three SW Atlantic population (Brasil, Mar del Plata, Rincón), which possible conform a subspecies of Scomber japonicus. The second one was represented by the coastal mackerel off Cataluña.

The species Phaleria testacea Say, 1824 (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) varies a lot in size, and its populations along the coast of Brazil, where it lives buried in sandy beaches, have temporal and geographical variation in density. In order to find out which factors were contributing to these variations, we sampled populations from three different areas in Rio de Janeiro, during summer and winter. Simultaneously, we made an analysis of the different substracts where the individuals were found, including their total fresh weight. The results show a significant difference in size of individuals between and within populations, when summer and winter were compared. There is also a positive association between the population density of P. testacea and the amount...

Carangidae). OceanDocs
Pacheco Tack, R.; Cousseau, M.B..
The aim of this paper is to discuss the validity of the taxonomic status formerly assigned to the rough scad inhabiting shelf waters off Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Until recently the species had been considered, mainly by Argentine authors, as Trachurus picturatus australis, on the basis of a description by Nani (1950). Other authors, however, consider that the only valid species for the West Atlantic is Trachurus lathami. In general terms, there references are based on rather scarce material for this region. In this paper, we compare meristic and morphometric data from 160 specimens collected off Mar del Plata. Statistical analysis of the characteristics lead us to conclude that the valid scientific name of the Argentine rough scad is Trachurus...

Morphological and allozyme studies of midwife toads (genus Alytes), including the description of two new taxa from Spain Naturalis
Arntzen, J.W.; García-París, M..
Allozyme variation in 31 to 50 presumptive loci of 12 populations of European midwife toads of the genus Alytes show appreciable genetic divergences (DiNe from 0.29 to 0.72) among four groups. These groups correspond to A. cisternasii Boscá, 1879, A. obstetricans (Laurenti, 1768), A. muletensis (Sanchiz & Adrover, 1979), and a new species from the Betic mountains described here as A. dickhilleni n. sp. Smaller divergences among geographic groups of populations of A. obstetricans (up to DNei = 0.17) support the existence of three geographic units in Europe corresponding to the previously recognized subspecies A. o. obstetricans and A. o. boscai Lataste, 1879, plus a third one described here under the designation of A. o. almogavarii n. ssp. The analysis...

Pineda, S.E.; Aubone, A.; Brunetti, N.E..
Beaks of Loliginid squids have very similar morphological features making identification of the species to be quite difficult. A new metodology to identify species from the relative growth of some parts of the beak is presented. Samples of Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensiswere obtained from ten reserch cruises of RVS "Dr. Holmberg" and "Captain Oca Balda" and eight commercial landings at Mar del Plata Port during the period 1992-1993. The results obtained using the new metodology (Metric Discriminant Criterium)were compared with those resulting from the application of the Fisher's Lineal Discriminant Criterium. Both mantle length - rostral length and total weight - rostral length relationships, corresponding to each species were fitted. Either upper or...

Description of Illex argentinus beaks and rostral length relationships with size and weight of squids. OceanDocs
Brunetti, N.E.; Ivanovic, M.L..
A description of Illex argentinus beaks, made on the basis of qualitative and quantitative characteristics, is presented. Likewise the equations that represent the relationships between the rostral length of each beak with the mantle length and total weight of squids are proposed, as a tool for reconstructing them. A total of 291 squids, comprising the complete size range, from juveniles to adults, were analyzed for the latter purpose. The morphometric description was made on a total of 90 individuals from the Argentine Sea, taking the following measurements on each beak: rostral length, hood length, crest length, wing length and wing width. Results showed that Illex argentinus beaks present the general scheme of that corresponding to the Ommastrephidae...

Morphometric observations on three populations of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), a main wheat aphid pest in Brazil Anais da SEB
Rubin-de-Celis,Verônica E.; Gassen,Dirceu N.; Callegari-Jacques,Sídia M.; Valente,Vera L. S.; Oliveira,Alice K..
The green aphid Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) is an important pest of Graminae. Samples of this aphid were collected at three environmentally distinct Brazilian localities, Passo Fundo (RS), Jaguariuna (SP) and Dourados (MS). Alatae and apterous viviparous forms were reared on the BR-35 wheat (Triticum aestivum) strain under controlled laboratory conditions and studied as to their variability in measures of body size and production of progeny. Univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate (canonical discriminant functions) techniques were used to evaluate differences among the three populations. Conspicuous differences between populations were observed in the length of five structures of the alatae and eight of the apterous forms, as well as in offspring production....

Studies on the intrinsic nervous system of the wild rodent Calomys callosus digestive tract. II: The submucous plexus BJMBR
Souza,N.B.; Liberti,E.A.; De-Souza,R.R..
The submucous plexus of the normal small and large intestine of Calomys callosus was studied by NADH and AChE histochemical techniques and by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The plexus contains (mean ± SD) 7,488 ± 293 neurons/cm2 in the duodenum, 5,611 ± 836 in the jejunum, 2,741 ± 360 in the ileum, 3,067 ± 179 in the cecum, and 3,817 ± 256 in the proximal colon. No ganglia or nerve cell bodies were seen in the esophagus, stomach, distal colon or rectum. The neurons are pear-shaped with a round or oval nucleus and the neuronal cell profile areas were larger in the large intestine than in the small intestine. Most of the neurons display intense AChE activity in the cytoplasm. AChE-positive nerve fibers are present in a primary meshwork of...

Probable effect of photoperiod on seasonal variation in the nuclear volume of the adrenal cortex of viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) BJMBR
Ribes,A.C.; Mohamed,F.; Dominguez,S.; Delgado,M.; Scardapane,L.; Guzman,J.; Piezzi,R..
The neuroendocrine system regulates several organic functions such as reproduction, metabolism and adaptation to the environment. This system shows seasonal changes linked to the environment. The experimental model used in the present study was Lagostomus maximus maximus (viscacha). The reproduction of males of this species is photoperiod dependent. Twenty-four adult male viscachas were captured in their habitat at different times during one year. The adrenal glands were processed for light microscopy. Serial cuts were stained with hematoxylin-eosin for the morphometric study, and 100 nuclei of each zone of the adrenal cortex were counted per animal. Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and the Tukey test. The cells of the glomerulosa zone are...

Volpedo, A..
Otoliths (sagitta, asteriscus and lapillus)are complex structures composed of calcium carbonate, other minerals, and a protein matrix. Otoliths are located in the internal ear of the teleost fishes. The shape and structure of otoliths are specific for each species. For this reason, otoliths are used to identify species in biological and ecological studies.Sciaenids conform a group of fishes of commercial importance, so the handling of this resource is a high-priority topic for the local and national economies of countries that exploit these species. The purpose of this work is to study different aspects of the sagittae of marine sciaenids from Argentina and Peru. The morphology, morphometry and chemical composition has been analyzed in relation to the...

Morphometric analysis, mimicry, and color polymorphism in five species of Chauliognathus Hentz (Coleoptera, Cantharidae) Zoologia
Machado,Vilmar; Araújo,Aldo M. de; Mosmann,Cleri S..
This study presents data on morphometric variation for length and width of elytra in tive sympatric species of the genus Chauliognathus Hentz, 1830: C. flavipes Fabricius, 1781, C. octomaculatus Pie, 1915, C. expansus Waterhouse, 1878, C. fallax Germar, 1824 and C. lineatus Zwetsch & Machado, 2000. The meaning of this variation is discussed in the light of the theory of mimicry and visual communication between prey and predator. Females are larger than males in all species, except C. expansus. The analysis of variance for length of elytron as well as for width showed that the differences between species are significant for males and females; significant interaction (sex x species) was also found. The similarity in color pattern of these species, as...

Morphological identification of two southwest Atlantic loliginid squids: Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensis OceanDocs
Pineda, S.E.; Hernandez, D.R.; Brunetti, N.E.; Jerez, B..
Morphological characters of two loliginid squids, Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensis, in the SW Atlantic region off Argentina were studied to obtain a diagnostic criterion for their identification. Emphasis was placed on the taxonomic characters suitable to identify individuals in the whole size range. Considering the uncertainty associated to the correct identification of juveniles, their taxonomic status was confirmed using electrophoretic studies. Discrimination between species based on morphological characters proved to be more effective than meristic counts. A discriminant function that allows an easy separation of the two species is presented. The function, composed of two indices: fin width mantle length (FW/ML)and gladius width mantle length...
